They say that money talks. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard mine speaking. It says, “Goodbye”.
People have always been driven to gain treasure and other possessions. It’s nothing new. The only thing different is what somebody says is valuable at the time.
Henry David Thoreau wrote in his journal in March of 1856 these poignant words: “That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.” I don’t know what all was going on in Thoreau’s life at that point, but I think he was right.
I have some understanding about what is going on in the lives of many these days as far as the economy is concerned. Money is tight and lots of folks are fearful about the future.
And so it’s funny to me that people I know—church people mostly—still use their physical resources in such temporary ways. Perhaps one of the reasons for foolish spending is an effort to gain personal worth through personal wealth. It just won’t work.
Christ-followers ought to be different when it comes to their resources, but, for the most part, they aren’t. Jesus said you’ll find your heart wherever your treasure is.
